Getting Ready For Football Season

Getting Ready For Football Season

[This article was first published in August 2021. It has been expanded and revised for the 2022 season.]

Armchair quarterbacks, amateur color commentators, and football widows all know that football season begins long before the first kickoff.

And that usually means having other like-minded fans and friends over for the football festivities. Which also usually means both indoor and outdoor entertaining, depending on the weather. And that can mean lots of trash.

So, It's Football Season Again. What Do You Do to Get Ready?

Depending on a variety of factors, getting ready for football season can mean many things to many people.

For some, getting ready will mean preparing their bodies for strenuous feats of athleticism and high-speed collisions. For others, it means updating the fantasy draft roster and perfecting the art of the Macho Nacho Plate (which is actually a thing).

And it could also mean getting ready to watch or participate in a lot of activities involving the ol’ pigskin.

So whatever you’re planning on doing during football season, we have some suggestions.

In Front of the Big Screen or On It, You Gotta Be Ready

1. If You’re Playing

Whether it’s a peewee football league, a high school season, or the Saturday morning pickup game at the park, if you’re going to be physically engaged in the great fall sport, there should be some basic steps taken before you step onto the field.

Namely, get a physical.

If you’re young, think of it as the prerequisite to play (it usually is). If you’re old, think of it as a good time to assess your health while also checking to make sure all the necessary parts will allow you to run a post pattern.

Once that’s done, put some time into conditioning before the season starts.

This includes the obvious steps like weightlifting, running, and position drills. The less-obvious conditioning steps include flexibility and nutrition, both of which can play a huge role in a long season.

Flexibility allows a player to maximize their on-field performance capabilities while also offering some additional protection from injuries. Good nutrition will allow lead to on-field benefits while aiding in the body’s ability to recover between games and practices.

And hydrate even when you get off the field or the field has a canopy or roof. Water will always be one of the most essential tools for a football game.

2. If You’re Watching

First of all, for general health considerations, consider getting a physical just for general health reasons. Secondly, don’t assume that not participating in the game means you don’t have to consider your own health and safety.

Move around when you can.

Treat watching a game like working at a desk job; get up and stretch and walk whenever the chance presents itself. Obviously, this will be easier at peewee and high school games, but take every advantage you can to be in motion. Even strolling to the bathroom or the snack bar counts as movement. (Although too many trips to the snack bar kind of defeats the purpose...)

Hydrate.

This is just as important for the guys in the stands as it is for the guys on the field. It doesn’t matter if you’re screaming encouragement with every play or just taking in the game quietly - get some water. This also applies to night games.

Oh, and by the way, beer doesn't count as hydrating.

Also, dare to be different and show some basic courtesy to everyone else watching the game. Don’t purposely kick over people’s chairs and snacks, don’t pick fights with people cheering for the other team, and maybe leave the body paint and animal masks at home. (Especially at the peewee games!)

3. If You’re Gonna Armchair Quarterback

Don’t be a jerk. That’s it.

4. If You Plan To Do Nothing Since You Don’t Like Football or Sports in General

We got nothing. This list isn’t for you. Move along.
