Hoarding Or Just Cluttering?

Hoarding Or Just Cluttering?

No one would think that they're hoarding stuff in their home. They've just let things get a little cluttered and disorganized. Right?

The truth is that hoarding is a real problem for some people, but most of us just have an issue with too much stuff and not enough space to put it all.

And of those people, some do have a tendency to hold on to things that should have been gotten rid of long ago. Not hoarding exactly - at least not in the true clinical sense - but a real problem nonetheless.

Hoarding Vs Clutter

We often hear stories about hoarders who are found in their homes buried under piles of books or boxes. While tragic, these events are really not all that common. But people with hoarding issues and disorders are more common than we might think.

But hoarding is quite different from having a lot of clutter.

According to a story from the Washington Post,

"Hoarding is different from merely living amid clutter, experts note. It’s possible to have a messy house and be a pack rat without qualifying for a diagnosis of hoarding behavior. The difference is one of degree. Hoarding disorder is present when the behavior causes distress to the individual or interferes with emotional, physical, social, financial or legal well-being."

While that should make you feel better about yourself, the overabundance of "stuff" that is cluttering up your house and living space still needs to be addressed. That's because, in part, for our own well-being. Though you may not be a hoarder, you may be getting stressed out from all the clutter!

A story in The New York Times had this to say about household clutter,

"If you have to move things around in order to accomplish a task in your home or at your office or you feel overwhelmed by all your “things,” it’s a strong signal that clutter has prevailed. And it might be stressing you out more than you realize.

“Clutter is an overabundance of possessions that collectively create chaotic and disorderly living spaces,” said Joseph Ferrari, a professor of psychology at DePaul University in Chicago who studies the causes of clutter and its impact on emotional well-being. And a cluttered home, researchers are learning, can be a stressful home."

What you don't need in your life is more stress, right? So, time to deal with the clutter.

Decluttering and Destressing

Getting rid of all the unwanted and unnecessary clutter filling your house is only a good start. Once you've gone through and purged your home of all the junk items, broken or unusable utensils, tools, appliances and what have you, the next step is to organize the things you've chosen to hold on to.

This might involve creating new ways to store your things and even buying new storage crates and other types of containers. It means making the best use of the available storage space your home has and using vertical space wherever possible.

It also means being somewhat ruthless in your commitment to keep things to a functional and comfortable minimum, while being diligent to keep everything in its place when its not being used.

Oh, yes - and it certainly means you need to stop holding on to new things unless you need them and have a place for them.
