How To Sell Old Appliances

How To Sell Old Appliances

When you find yourself with a washer, a dryer, or maybe a mini-fridge that you no longer want, you may wonder if you can sell old appliances?

The answer, of course, is a resounding “Yes!”

The real question is “How can I sell old appliances easily?” And that’s a bit more involved. Maybe you’ve recently upgraded to a new set of machines for your laundry room. Or perhaps it was the kitchen - new stove, dishwasher and refrigerator? Whichever new appliance you’ve gotten for yourself usually means an old one that needs to be gotten rid of.

Old Appliance: Needs a New Home

There are far more options today for selling your old appliances than there were just 20 or 30 years ago. Back then you pretty much had to find a buyer by word of mouth, classified ads in the local paper, or put your old machine in a garage sale.

But in 1995, both eBay and Craigslist were founded and began an entirely new wrinkle in personal buying and selling. Today you have a myriad of selling options, but the “old school” approaches are still viable and still used by many people, especially for old appliances.

Here’s an overview of your selling options if you do need to sell old appliances:

Classified Ads

Despite the dominance of the Internet and just about everything being online, print newspapers are still going strong and especially the smaller, local weeklies. Unsurprisingly, the more rural regions of the country rely more on the local papers than urban residents, but newspapers are still out there. In fact, there are still over 1,200 weekly papers. And so are their classified ads, or the venerable “Want Ads”, as they are often called.

Garage Sales

This is an American tradition and has become an ever more popular activity for many people. It’s common in many regions for folks to make a day out of “Sale-ing” on a Saturday, hitting as many garage sales and yard sales as possible, looking for deals and looking for treasures. TV shows like Auction Kings and American Pickers have helped to fuel the popularity of garage sales.

Used Appliance Stores

There are a variety of businesses that buy, refurbish and resell old appliances. Many are small, independent shops that are just a step above being junk dealers, while others are chains that offer a mix of new and used inventory. Some shops offer free pick up of your old appliance, while most expect you to bring it in yourself. You may not get much, but it’s convenient.

Scrap Metal Dealer

There are businesses that deal in scrapping metals for recycling purposes. They typically buy old junk cars, tools, piping, and a wide variety of objects that are metal, or have large amounts of metal in them. And your old appliances are almost always made of massive amounts of steel. This is an especially good option for appliances that don’t work well anymore or not at all.

Friends and Family

While this is not always a viable option, it’s definitely worth considering before selling your old appliance to a stranger. Word of mouth and simply asking around can often open the door to a need that you may not have already been aware of. While you still may not get much money for your used machine, you’ll know that you’ve helped out a friend, a neighbor or family member.

Online Sites

Many years ago it seemed that there were essentially only two places for this kind of selling: eBay and Craigslist. A lot has changed in just the last 10 years. Here’s a brief listing of some of the selling sites that have cropped up online recently:

  1. Letgo
  2. OfferUp
  3. Bookoo
  4. 5Miles
  5. Shpock
  6. VarageSale
  7. Wallapop
  8. Facebook Marketplace
  9. Tradyo
  10. Nextdoor

Each of these sites has its own particulars. Some charge fees, others only take a transaction fee, while some are completely free. Keep in mind that when selling anything online that good, clear images are critical, as are compelling descriptions and full disclosure of defects and/or damage.

Don’t Want to Sell Old Appliances After All?

Maybe you’ve discovered that, while selling your appliances is a pretty easy thing to pull off, you probably won’t get much money for them. Although the demand for used, but working, appliances is huge, the resell value is not so much.

But don’t despair!

The good news is that you can still find a good home for your old units and feel good about in the process.

Most all national charities such as Goodwill, The Salvation Army and others will take working appliances. In addition, you can look online for local agencies and organizations that either need appliances themselves or refurbish and resell them to help fund their missions.

Alternatively, you could create your own “mission” and ask around for a family or senior who is need of a working washing machine, dryer, stove, refrigerator or other appliance. It’s quite likely that there is someone in your own neighborhood who would be greatly helped by your old item.

Finally, you can always call the professionals to come and take your old appliances away for you.
