Schedule A Non-Working Refrigerator Pick-Up

Schedule A Non-Working Refrigerator Pick-Up

[This article was originally published in October 2019 and has been revised and expanded.]

So, your old refrigerator finally stopped working and you have to replace it. But how do you schedule a non-working refrigerator pick-up for recycling?

While some retailers may offer to take your old refrigerator away with them after they deliver your new appliance, this is not always the case.

When Your Trusty Old Refrigerator Finally Stops Working

It's an unfortunate fact of domestic home life that kitchen appliances don't last forever. Depending on the appliance, the average lifespan is about 10 years, according to an article posted by Consumer Reports.

And it can come as a bit of a shock when that large appliance that has served you so well for so long suddenly up and dies on you! Which, of course, means replacing your worn-out or broken-down appliance. This includes refrigerators.

But the problem many homeowners (and businesses) find is that if they go out and buy a new refrigerator unit the old one has to be disposed of. Sometimes this is taken care of by the store that sold them the new unit. But not always.

And, in those instances where the old, non-working refrigerator has been replaced with a used refrigerator then they're probably having to take care of all the hauling and removing themselves!

So, How Do You Get Rid of That Non-Working Refrigerator?

The truth is that many people end up with old refrigerators just sitting around in their garage, basement, or even spare rooms because they are so hard to haul away.

If the unit is still usable this might be an acceptable option. However, even if it does still keep things cool it may not do so efficiently. And this means your electric bill is going to show an increase. While having the additional freezer and refrigerated storage might be handy it may not be cost-effective.

Another alternative might be to find a used appliance dealer that accepts non-working appliances such as old refrigerators. These shops often specialize in repairing and refurbishing old appliances such as stoves, washers, and refrigerators and re-selling them.

Although this may be an option if you have any shops like these in your area, you may still have to do the hauling and delivering of your old refrigerator yourself. And this means that you really won't be doing it yourself since no one is going to pick up and load a refrigerator alone! So, not only do you need to get someone to help, you need a truck or trailer (or both!) to haul it with.

You might be able to donate a non-working refrigerator, but this is not likely as most places cannot repair donated appliances.

Your old fridge is made primarily of metal. In fact, according to Hunker.com,

"Refrigerators consist of around 60 percent metal, the bulk of the weight coming from iron and steel. In fact, the average refrigerator contains 123 pounds of steel, according to estimates of the Appliance Recycling Information Institute."

What this can mean for you is a potential chunk of cash from a local scrap metal dealer. This can be done in a couple of ways. A post at First Quarter Finance noted that,

"There are a few different ways you can sell a refrigerator for scrap. The least profitable way is to scrap the refrigerator as a whole unit, in which case you would get a per-pound price for scrap metal. The scrap yards we contacted quoted refrigerator prices around $15 to $30 per unit, depending on the size and weight of the refrigerator."

The other approach is to dismantle most of your old non-working refrigerator yourself and sell the compressor separately from the bulk of the appliance. This can net you more cash but still involves loading and hauling it to the dealer, not to mention dismantling it.

When it comes to non-working refrigerator disposal and recycling, there are a few key things that one should know prior to undertaking such a task. So, we put together this handy checklist of important points:

Of course, while it is certainly possible for some people to manage this task themselves, the easiest approach to getting rid of your old, non-working refrigerator is to have someone else come and take it away for you.

According to one blog post,

Typically, the standard size for a professional-grade refrigerator falls between 30 to 36 inches width, 67 to 70 inches in height, and 29 to 35 inches in depth.

That means you're working with an almost six-foot tall, two-cubic yard, and an almost 300-pound hulk of steel, glass, and plastic! Definitely not a DIY chore for most folks. But the good news is that you don't have to take care of this type of job yourself.
