Why Should You Haul Junk Away Yourself?
[This article was originally published in September 2021. It has been revised and updated.]
In this life there will be junk. It is inevitable and, when the time comes, you may be think that the only solution is to haul junk away yourself. Not so.
It is certainly possible and people do it all the time. But just because you can haul away your own junk doesn't mean you should.
What Do You Do When the Junk Piles Up?
Everyone has things and most of us have a home to put them in. Some homes, of course, are much large than others. Some have garages and even storage closets or sheds. Many others do not.
And some of us have almost no place for all of our things so we make use of self-storage rental units.
However we manage it, the point is that we all have belongings.
The problem is, that for many of us, our belongings break down, or get old, or become useless to us. And that's when they transform from being things we own to junk we want to get rid of.
For the small things, say, those items that are smaller than a microwave oven or a boombox (remember those?), getting rid of them often just means putting them in the trash.
We say, if it's recyclable, be sure to put in in the Recycling bin - not the trash.
But what about the big junk?
You know - all the worn out furniture, old large-screen TVs, or even broken-down appliances? Actually, the list can go on for quite a ways. And they all have one thing in common: they won't fit in a recycling or waste bin.
Granted, if you live in a complex with dumpsters on-site you could likely put them in one. But that's not only a less-than-desirable disposal solution for most junk items, it's probably against the rules.
Fortunately, Junk King specializes in hauling away junk.
Why You Shouldn't Haul Junk Away Yourself
Taking a DIY route to junk hauling is really dependent on a few critical factors:
- Transportation
- Capability
- Desire
Most junk that's too large for a residential trash bin is going to be a problem in the family sedan or even SUV. Especially if you have multiple junk items you want to haul off.
Which means having a pickup truck is the usual component needed to make "do-it-yourself" junk hauling feasible.
Also, some junk items such as mattresses, old furniture, and appliances can be far larger and heavier than any one person can manage themselves. If you don't have capable help then it is highly unlikely you're going to get grandma's 80-year-old solid wood china hutch out of the house yourself.
And, most importantly, is the issue of whether you really want to do this yourself?
Odds are, you don't.
We get it. The steps, equipment, and costs involved for you to haul junk away yourself makes the entire process challenging and difficult for most people. Even if they really want to haul junk.
Not to worry! Junk King has the perfect solution. Let us haul junk away for you.
What Happens to Residential Junk that Ends Up in a Landfill?
This is one of the major concerns when it comes to the traditional "DIY" household junk removal approach. Everything that people don't want any longer ends up in the back of a truck or some kind of trailer and then gets hauled off as one load.
And this load (or two loads or more!) will end up going directly to the nearest landfill facility or, at the very least, to the closest waste transfer station. Either way, the end result of this type of junk disposal is almost everything being landfilled.
But the disheartening reality is that up to 80 percent of anything we toss out is recyclable.
And much of it is probably reusable "as is" or with a bit of repair and refurbishing. Which means that a large percentage of people hauling and unloading their own junk and household debris are simply contributing to a bad problem and making it worse.
While the overall percentage of junk and debris being landfilled has decreased from 94 percent in 1960 to just 50 percent as recently as 2018, there's more to the picture.
in the last 60 years, the total amount of trash generated in the United States has increased almost three and a half times! In other words, we've gone from producing 88.1 million tons of solid waste to throwing out almost 300 million tons of trash, waste, and junk in 2020.
And although the percentage of our waste that is being landfilled has dropped, the actual amount of landfilled trash and garbage has increased. We landfilled just 82.5 million tons in 1960. But in 2020, it is estimated that we landfilled over 147 million tons - or almost 45 percent more waste.
While the science behind landfilling and tracking capacity is disputed by some, most researchers agree that the U.S. is soon to run out of viable landfills.
Clearly, having a green alternative to just dumping your junk into a landfill is far better. And Junk King is the "King of Green" when it comes to residential junk removal and disposal!
