What You Should Know About Dumpster Rental in Richmond
Getting rid of unwanted junk is a regular part of life in Richmond and anywhere else in the world. And it’s something that many of us take for granted because, for most of us, it’s simply a matter of putting it in the trash.
However, we occasionally run into situations where you can’t simply throw your unwanted items in the trash. Maybe because the items are too big, or there’s far too much of it.
That’s when it helps to have other ways of getting rid of unwanted stuff effectively. Oftentimes, this can mean hiring a full-service junk disposal company. But, for some projects, a better waste removal solution is renting a dumpster for your junk.
The good news is that, in Richmond, you have plenty of options for both.
When Should You Rent Your Own Dumpster?
There are typically three ways to haul your junk: you can do it yourself, you can hire a full-service junk removal company to take care of everything for you, or you can rent a dumpster to fill on your own.
While the second option may sound like the easiest one, if you choose the wrong company it can be expensive way to have your trash, debris or old belongings taken it away for disposal. Yet, using a full-service junk-removal company can be a convenient option because you don’t necessarily have to move anything yourself, unlike the do-it-yourself option.
Considering Dumpster Rental for Junk Removal
A junk removal service may be the better option if all your junk is going to be in one place, at one time, and won’t accumulate further. In addition, a junk removal service is great for amounts greater than 12 cubic yards.
A dumpster, on the other hand, is perfect for getting rid of the debris created from landscaping, remodeling projects, and large-scale clean outs. Richmond dumpster rental prices depend on your location, the size of dumpster you need, how long you need it, possible permits that might be required and the company you rent from.
You should also bear in mind the amount of waste you have and whether will be accumulating over time.
A dumpster rental can be a great option if you expect to generate large amounts of debris over a period time like with a renovation project. A dumpster is ideal for quantities of 12 cubic yards or less.
Richmond dumpster rental is relatively consistent with most companies. You simply call a dumpster rental company, arrange a date for having it dropped off, fill the dumpster with junk or debris, and them call to have it collected.
Permits
In some locales you may have to secure a permit before having your dumpster unloaded on your street or you may incur a fine.
Winter Weather and Snow
Snow is common during Virginia winters and you’ll have to factor it into your dumpster rental plans. Winter storms can wreak havoc with scheduling. Because of this, a good winter strategy is to plan your rentals for periods that are not likely to experience heavy snowfall.
Another issue is that snow and ice increases the weight of the dumpster. This can make your fee more expensive if your dumpster is rented based on the weight of your dumpster when it’s picked up. Junk King charges you based on the amount of space you use, however, so you aren’t charged for weight from snow and ice.
Renting a Dumpster in Richmond: What You Need to Know
As already pointed out, a rented dumpster is often the best way to get rid of large amounts of waste. You avoid making multiple trips to a waste management facility by filling the dumpster gradually as you work through your projects. And, once you’re done, you simply have the provider pick up the filled dumpster.
Dumpster Rental FAQs
What’s Not Allowed in a Rental Dumpster?
Dumpsters rented in Richmond are subject to state-wide regulations that prohibit specific materials. Make sure that the materials you need to dispose of are suitable for a dumpster.
The following items are typically considered banned waste items and may result in handling charges:
- Televisions or computers
- Mattresses and difficult to manage furniture
- Propane tanks
- Car tires
- Batteries
- Dehumidifiers
- Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners
- Washing machines
- Dishwashers
- Dryers
Federal law also prohibits placing household hazardous waste inside dumpsters. Examples of common these materials include:
- Paint
- Bleach
- Motor oil
- Household cleaners
- Pesticide
- Lawn fertilizers
- Medication
- Pool chemicals
Explosive or corrosive substances and highly flammable materials are prohibited entirely. It’s always a good idea to contact a junk removal company if you’re unsure about anything you want to put in a rented dumpster.
How Long Can Dumpsters be Rented?
Some dumpster rental companies charge based on the length of time that you want to rent the unit, so it is critical that you make sure to check beforehand. But some companies only charge you for the space you use in the dumpster and for a set period. These companies may prove to be more cost-effective for some Richmond residents.
Where Can You Put Rental Dumpsters?
Renting a dumpster can be the most convenient way to take care of your waste disposal project, but there are logistical considerations involved. Typically, it must be located on your property instead of a city street and other public right of way areas that may require permits.
You should also plan to have it placed where it will be easily accessible, like a driveway or even a yard, when the dumpster rental company comes to pick it up.
What are Rental Dumpster Sizes?
Dumpsters typically are available in several standard sizes. In fact, most people are familiar with the large 40 cubic yard receptacles. However, unless you’re renting a dumpster for commercial job of some kind, you probably won’t need one that large.
In fact, a 12-cubic yard dumpster like Junk King’s Dumpster can easily hold all the junk from your garage or basement clean-out, or the debris generated from your remodel or landscaping project.
What about the Environment?
Junk King is proud to be North America’s greenest junk removal service. We pioneered recycling-based junk removal in 2005 and have been going greener ever since. We sort for metals, e-waste, paper, household goods, textiles, furniture and appliances, in our recycling warehouses.
We also donate, repurpose, and reuse everything from clothing, toys, baby cribs and strollers to office furniture and supplies. In fact, we recycle, reuse or donate up to 60% of what we haul!
Dumpster Rental Considerations
When renting a dumpster, you need to consider the overall cost and the fee structure offered. Some companies charge by the day, others by the weight when it’s picked up, and others by the amount of space that you use. Most people find this last option to be the most cost-effective since it allows them to save money with most junk removal projects.
You should also think about what type of company you want to use, as well. All junk removal firms are different. Some are more suited for commercial work, while others make it a point to cater to residential customers. Some are more eco-friendly than others. And some companies are simply easier to work with than others.
Understanding Dumpster Rental Costs in Richmond
Different companies have different fee structures, but Junk King Richmond lets you pay only for the space you actually use! As noted previously, this is often the most cost-effective approach for most renters since other dumpster rental companies start with a flat fee and then add in other costs.
In addition, if you have a smaller project, the Junk King Dumpster can save you money. And the Dumpster holds up to 12 cubic yards of junk or debris, so it can work for anything from major cleaning projects to minor home remodels.
How Our Dumpster Rental Pricing Works
Keep in mind that different companies use different pricing models. Junk King keeps things transparent in our terms and conditions. The industry standard is to charge a single price, but Junk King does things differently. We provide flexible pricing options to give our customers better value. Our prices include delivery, pick-up, and standard disposal and recycling services.
Our minimum price is our lowest charge to drop off and pick up the dumpster bin. If you have only a few items, you may qualify for the minimum charge. If your dumpster is at or about half full, you’ll get about a 30% discount to the full price, depending on your location. If your dumpster is more than half full, you pay the full price for the dumpster rental service.
Terms to know:
- Load size: This is the amount of junk in cubic yards when loaded by hand. You are only charged based on how many cubic yards you use.
- Bedload: Four cubic yards of loose debris such as dirt, rocks, tiles, shingles, bricks, or chunks of broken concrete is equivalent to a large truck bedload. One bedload is a dumpster that is 1/3 full.
- Daily rates: Our standard pricing includes up to 3 days of rental. After that a $20 fee for each day will be added.
Standard Fees That May Apply
The cost for a dumpster rental is the same regardless of what kind of waste you have, with a few exceptions. Some special waste incurs mandatory fees at the recycling center or landfill so, like all Richmond dumpster services, Junk King must add on these costs. Examples are electronics such as televisions and computers or bulky items like mattresses.

When You Should Consider Dumpster Rental
Richmond residents with large junk removal needs sometimes ask, “When do I actually need a dumpster?”
Many of these homeowners think dumpster rentals are only needed if the amount of junk is too much to haul themselves. But when you consider the options, especially the time, money and effort needed to do it yourself, a rented dumpster can be great for even smaller amounts of junk.
